Metronidazole Vaginal

Metronidazole Vaginal is a prescription medication used to treat the symptoms of Bacterial Vaginosis. 

• Metronidazole Vaginal is available under the following different brand names: MetroGel Vaginal, Vandazole, Nuvessa

Adult and pediatric dosage

Vaginal gel

• 0.75% (MetroGel Vaginal, Vandazole)
• 1.3% (Nuvessa)

Bacterial Vaginosis

Adult dosage

• 0.75%: One applicatorful intraVaginal once a day/two times a day for 5 days at bedtime
• 1.3%: One applicatorful intraVaginal once as a single dose at bedtime

Pediatric dosage

• Children below 12 years: Safety and efficacy not established
• Adolescents aged above 12 years
• 0.75%: One applicatorful intraVaginal once a day/two times a day for 5 days at bedtime
• 1.3%: One applicatorful intraVaginal once as a single dose at bedtime

Common side effects of Metronidazole Vaginal include:

• vaginal itching or discharge,
• menstrual pain,
• breast pain,
• headache,
• rash,
• nausea,
• diarrhea, and
• cold symptoms such as stuffy nose, sneezing, or sore throat

Serious side effects of Metronidazole Vaginal include:

• convulsions (seizures),
• hives,
• difficulty breathing,
• swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, and
• numbness, burning, pain, or tingly feeling in the hands or feet

Rare side effects of Metronidazole Vaginal include:

• none 

Seek medical care or call 911 at once if you have the following serious side effects:

• Severe headache, confusion, slurred speech, arm or leg weakness, trouble walking, loss of coordination, feeling unsteady, very stiff muscles, high fever, profuse sweating, or tremors;
• Serious eye symptoms such as sudden vision loss, blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain or swelling, or seeing halos around lights;
• Serious heart symptoms such as fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeats; fluttering in your chest; shortness of breath; and sudden dizziness, lightheartedness, or passing out.
