What Is Modafinil and How Does It Work?
Modafinil is a prescription drug that promotes wakefulness and can be used to treat conditions such as obstructive sleep apnea, hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS), narcolepsy, and shift work sleep disorder.
Modafinil is available under the following different brand names: Provigil.
Dosages of Modafinil
Adult and pediatric dosages:
Tablet, Schedule IV
- 100 mg
- 200 mg
Dosage Considerations – Should be Given as Follows:
Obstructive Sleep Apnea/Hypopnea Syndrome (OSAHS)
Adults:
- 200 mg orally each morning, no more than 400 mg per day
Pediatric
- Children under 16 years old: not recommended
- Children 16 years and older: 200 mg orally each morning, no more than 400 mg per day
Narcolepsy
Adults:
- 200 mg orally each morning, no more than 400 mg per day
Pediatric:
- Children under 16 years old: not recommended
- Children 16 years and older: 200 mg orally each morning, not to exceed 400 mg per day
Shift Work Sleep Disorder
Adults:
- 200 mg orally 1 hour prior to patient’s work shift
Pediatric:
- Children under 16 years old: not recommended
- 200 mg orally 1 hour prior to patient’s work shift
Dosage Modifications
- Hepatic impairment, severe: 100 mg orally each morning
Other indications and uses
- Off-label: may reduce fatigue in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients and depression.
