What Is Mupirocin and How Does It Work?
Mupirocin is used to treat certain skin infections (such as impetigo). It is an antibiotic. It works by stopping the growth of certain bacteria.
Mupirocin is available under the following different brand names: Bactroban, Bactroban Nasal, and Centany.
Dosages of Mupirocin
Adult and Pediatric Dosage Forms and Strengths
Cream/topical ointment
- 2%
Nasal ointment
- 2%
Dosage Considerations – Should be Given as Follows:
Impetigo
- Adult: Apply 2% ointment to affected area every 8 hours
- Children over 2 months: Apply 2% ointment to affected area every 8 hours
- If no response in 3-5 days, reevaluate
Secondary Skin Infection
- Adult: Apply cream to affected area every 8 hours for 10 days
- Children over 3 months: Apply cream to affected area every 8 hours for 10 days
- If no response in 3-5 days, reevaluate
Elimination of MRSA Colonization
- Intranasal: Apply one-half of ointment from a single-use tube into each nostril every 12 hours for 5 days
- Pediatric: Safety and efficacy not established
- Children over 12 years (intranasal): Apply one-half of ointment from a single-use tube into each nostril every 12 hours for 5 days
